Christmas morning brought more than just presents under the tree—it brought a smile to my 6-year-old son’s face thanks to a little automation magic! ![]()
I’ve been tinkering with smart home automation for a while now, but this year I wanted to create something truly special for the holidays. After some research and a bit of trial and error, I came up with an automation that would greet my son with festive cheer as soon as he woke up.
Here’s how it all came together:
The Setup
- Trigger: A motion sensor on my son’s bedroom door
- Time Window: Between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM
- Actions:
- Activate a pre-set scene that turns all the house lights to warm red and green hues
- Play a custom Alexa message: “Quick. Santa. Go… A.J. is awake!”
- Follow up with a sleigh bell sound effect
The Result
When my son opened his bedroom door, the house instantly transformed into a holiday wonderland. The lights, the sound effects, and the festive message all came together perfectly. My son was absolutely thrilled—he couldn’t wait to tell the whole family about his “magic” morning!
A Few Tips for Others
- Timing is Everything: I set the automation to run only during the early morning hours to ensure it was a surprise and not too disruptive later in the day.
- Keep It Simple: I used basic automation tools and pre-recorded sounds to keep the setup straightforward and reliable.
- Test, Test, Test: Before the big day, I ran through the automation a few times to make sure everything worked smoothly.
This little project was a great way to get the whole family into the holiday spirit, and it’s something I’ll definitely be doing again next year! ![]()
If anyone has their own holiday automation success stories or tips, I’d love to hear them!
Happy Holidays everyone! ![]()
