I recently embarked on an exciting project to create a custom Home Assistant tablet, and I must say, it’s been a fantastic experience! Using the Lenovo ThinkSmart View 8" tablet, I was able to install a custom ROM that’s perfectly tailored for Home Assistant. The process involved flashing the device and setting up a user-friendly interface, which was both challenging and rewarding. The tablet’s specs are impressive—8" display, Snapdragon 624, and a hefty 2GB RAM—making it a perfect fit for my setup. I even added a navigation bar for easier navigation, which was a great tip I found online. The device stands out in both portrait and landscape modes, and the angled design is perfect for placing on my kitchen counter. It’s heavy, so it doesn’t move around when I touch it, which is a big plus.
However, my journey wasn’t without its bumps. I encountered a minor issue where I couldn’t change my password for the Blink Mini camera app because I forgot my original password. After some research, I discovered that resetting the app and using a new email address was the solution. It was a bit stressful, but it taught me the importance of keeping my credentials safe.
Security is another area I’ve been focusing on. I recently set up a Vera 2 controller, and I was concerned about the security risks since any computer on my network could access it without login credentials. I found out that older UI versions allowed setting up local accounts, but UI4 removed that feature. After some digging, I learned that using network segmentation and restricting access through firewall rules can help mitigate these risks. It’s crucial to ensure that even my kids can’t accidentally mess up my smart home setup!
Another interesting project I worked on was wiring a Kidde SM120X smoke detector into my Honeywell alarm panel. I had to connect the relay on the hot side and set up the zone with an EOL resistor. Programming it to sound an alarm with a bit of delay was a neat touch, giving me a chance to reset the alarm if it goes off accidentally. It’s satisfying to see everything work seamlessly after a bit of trial and error.
As I continue my journey with Home Assistant, I’m constantly amazed by the community’s support and the wealth of resources available. Whether it’s troubleshooting minor issues or setting up new devices, the collective knowledge shared in forums like this makes everything possible. I’m grateful for every tip and solution that helps me enhance my smart home experience. Here’s to many more projects and discoveries!
