A Smooth Transition to Local Control with Hubitat

I recently made the switch from Tado to Hubitat for my heating system, and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else looking to make a similar move. The journey wasn’t without its bumps, but the end result has been worth it!

The Challenge

I live in Spain and have a combi boiler that I was controlling with a Tado thermostat. While Tado worked well, I wanted more direct control without relying on an app or a hub. After some research, I decided to try Hubitat along with some local control devices. However, finding the right setup was tricky. I needed a wired thermostat with in-built programming, compatible with Hubitat, and capable of controlling my gas boiler directly.

The Solution

After some digging, I came across the Heltun HE-HT01 thermostat. It seemed promising, but I wasn’t sure if it would work with my gas boiler. I reached out to the manufacturer, and they confirmed it could be adapted for gas boilers! Now, I have a setup that allows me to:

  • Program the thermostat directly at the unit without needing the Hubitat app.
  • Control radiator valves individually or in zones, giving me precise temperature control throughout the house.
  • Create custom rules in Hubitat to automate heating based on my schedule and preferences.

Key Takeaways

  1. Research is Key: Don’t hesitate to reach out to manufacturers if their products seem almost right for your needs. Often, they can provide workarounds or confirm compatibility.
  2. Local Control is Liberating: While smart apps are convenient, having physical controls gives peace of mind, especially for critical systems like heating.
  3. Hubitat’s Flexibility: If you’re into DIY and local control, Hubitat offers a lot of customization without the need for cloud dependency.

Final Thoughts

This transition has taught me the value of persistence and thorough research. It’s also reminded me that sometimes, the best solutions are the ones that blend the old and the new. If anyone else is considering a similar switch, I’d love to hear your experiences or questions!

Happy automating! :rocket:
