A Specific Device vs Multi Function Device

The Multi-State Sensor P100 topics and discussions got me thinking about which type of device performs better over all.

Do users prefer the specific device with easy to navigate menus, easy to setup that are rock solid and just work every time (set it and forget it)

or

Do users prefer the idea of one device that does it all with multiple options, numerous configurations and multiple navigation menus?

examples: Aqara Door and Window Sensor vs Multi-State Sensor P100
example: Aqara Vibration Sensor T2 vs Multi-State P100

I’ve been having the “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” feeling lately so I thought I would get others opinion.

I think a multi-purpose device can make sense as long as it is solving real problems. FP300 is a great example as it consolidates investments of multiple into one device. P100 could be similar, but I think in the end it’s primary function is still just a door sensor, and it has the tall order to do as good a job as a contact sensor.

It’s certainly beneficial to Aqara if they can reduce SKUs, but I don’t really see that happening either.

The main thing I feel wary of is solutions in search of a problem. A device can be novel for a while - but what problem does it really solve. That’s where I always start.
