A Successful Holiday Project: Integrating Music Controls with a Lenovo Tablet

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a project I completed over the holidays that has really enhanced how my family interacts with our smart home music system. The goal was to create a user-friendly interface for controlling our Amazon Echo devices and external speakers, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

The Challenge
Our house has a few Amazon Echo devices connected to external speakers in different rooms. While the sound quality is great, finding a family-friendly way to load music without dealing with technical complexities was proving challenging. The kids often wanted to play specific songs or artists, but the process felt too cumbersome for them.

The Solution
I decided to repurpose a cheap Lenovo M9 tablet I found on Amazon. The idea was to design a simple interface where anyone in the family could easily search for and play music. Here’s what I did:

  1. Interface Design

    • I created a very simple interface using conditions to show different devices, including a group where the speakers are linked in Amazon.
    • The interface displays what’s currently playing and includes a text field for entering the artist or song name. This works seamlessly with speech recognition, which the kids absolutely love!
  2. Automation and Controls

    • The interface includes a play/pause button that changes based on the Echo’s status.
    • I added automations to turn on the external speaker amps only when needed, ensuring they don’t stay on unnecessarily.
  3. Facial Recognition and Charging

    • To keep things tidy, I installed Fully Kiosk with facial recognition. This turns the screen on and off automatically, especially useful at night.
    • For charging, I used a smart inline plug that triggers when the tablet’s battery drops below 20%, ensuring it’s always ready to use.

The Results
This project has been a huge success! The kids can now easily search for and play their favorite songs, and even my parents, who aren’t tech-savvy, find it intuitive. It’s been wonderful to see how this simple setup has brought more joy to our home.

Tips for Others

  • Simplicity is Key: Focus on creating an interface that’s easy for everyone to use, regardless of their technical skills.
  • Automation Saves Energy: Automating the speaker amps ensures we’re not wasting energy when they’re not in use.
  • Facial Recognition: It’s a small touch, but it makes the experience feel more seamless and modern.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has similar projects or tips for improving music control in a smart home setup!
