I’ve been exploring ways to synchronize my lighting setup across multiple rooms, and I thought I’d share my journey and findings. Synchronization isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a cohesive and seamless experience throughout the home.
My Setup
I have a mix of Hue bulbs and some Z-Wave dimmers, all integrated into my SmartThings ecosystem. Initially, I was impressed with how the Hue app allowed me to create scenes that turned on multiple bulbs in perfect sync. However, replicating this within SmartThings proved to be a bit of a challenge.
The Challenge
When I tried using CoRE and Scene Machine, I noticed that the bulbs would turn on one after another, breaking the seamless effect I was aiming for. It was frustrating because the potential was there, but the execution wasn’t quite right.
The Solution
After some research and experimentation, I discovered that using a combination of SmartApps and custom routines could achieve the desired parallel operation. Here’s what worked for me:

SmartApp Configuration
- I utilized a custom SmartApp that allowed me to send simultaneous commands to all devices in a group. This bypassed the serial execution issue I was facing with CoRE and Scene Machine.

- I created a routine that triggers the SmartApp at specific times, ensuring that all lights adjust in unison. This has been particularly effective for mornings and evenings.

Testing and Tweaking
- It took a few iterations to get the timing just right, but the result has been worth the effort. My lights now turn on and dim in perfect sync, creating a welcoming atmosphere as soon as I walk in.
