Achieving Philips Smart Button Dimming Functionality with Hue Essentials

I’ve always been impressed by the Philips Smart Button’s ability to toggle between dimming up and down with just one press-and-hold action. It’s such a seamless way to control the lights without fumbling with multiple buttons. However, I’ve been trying to replicate this functionality with my Friends of Hue buttons, and it’s been a bit of a puzzle. Let me share my journey and the solution I found!

Initially, I was frustrated because the buttons didn’t seem to recognize the quick release and press-and-hold sequence I was aiming for. After some research and experimentation, I discovered that Hue Essentials actually allows for custom button mappings through its settings. By adjusting the button actions in the Hue app, I was able to configure one button to handle both dimming up and down based on how I press it.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Open the Hue app and navigate to the settings for your Friends of Hue button.
  2. Look for the option to customize button actions.
  3. Assign the press-and-hold action to dim down and the quick press followed by press-and-hold to dim up.
  4. Save the settings and test it out!

It’s been a game-changer for my lighting setup. Now, I can easily adjust the brightness without needing multiple buttons or complicated gestures. If anyone else is struggling with similar button configurations, I highly recommend exploring the Hue Essentials settings—it might just be the solution you’re looking for!

I’d love to hear if others have found creative ways to customize their button controls or if there are even better methods out there. Let’s keep the ideas flowing!
