Activating Light Scenes with Google Nest Camera Motion Detection

Hi everyone, I’ve been exploring how to integrate my Google Nest camera with my smart lighting system, and I thought I’d share my journey and some tips for anyone looking to do something similar!

The Goal:
I wanted to set up my living room so that when the Nest camera detects motion, it automatically triggers a light scene. This could be great for safety or just for convenience when I come home in the evening.

The Challenge:
At first, I wasn’t sure how to connect the motion detection from the camera to my lighting system. I tried a few different approaches through the app, but nothing seemed to work. I kept getting the feeling that I was missing a step or not using the right settings.

The Solution:
After some research and trial and error, I figured out that creating a flow or automation within my smart home app was the way to go. Here’s a simplified version of what I did:

  1. Enable Motion Detection: Make sure motion detection is turned on in your Nest camera settings.
  2. Set Up the Automation: In my smart home app, I created a new automation that triggers when the Nest camera detects motion.
  3. Link to Light Scene: I then linked this trigger to my desired light scene. In my case, it’s a soft, warm lighting setup that creates a welcoming atmosphere.

Tips for Others:

  • Test Incrementally: Start by testing each part of your setup separately. For example, trigger the light scene manually first to ensure it works, then move on to the motion detection.
  • Adjust Sensitivity: Play around with the motion detection sensitivity settings on your camera to avoid false triggers, like shadows or pets.
  • Combine with Other Devices: You can expand this setup by incorporating other smart devices, like speakers or thermostats, for a fully integrated experience.

My Experience:
It’s been a week since I set this up, and it’s been working beautifully! Coming home to a lit room without having to fumble for switches has been such a nice touch. It’s also given me peace of mind knowing that any unexpected motion is immediately met with light.

If anyone has questions or needs help setting something similar up, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot together.

Happy automating! :rocket:
