Affordable Water Shutoff Valve Approach: Seeking Feedback

I’m excited to share my journey of finding an affordable solution for an automated water shutoff valve system! After researching various options, I discovered that the cost of Z-Wave-enabled valves was simply too high for my budget. So, I decided to explore more cost-effective alternatives and came across some promising options.

Initially, I looked into valves like the Fortrezz and its Z-Wave counterparts, but they were priced between $300 to $400—way beyond my budget. I then turned to eBay, where I found occasional listings for valves in the $200 range, but the bidding wars quickly drove the prices back up. That’s when I stumbled upon non-Z-Wave valves from Smarthome and Insteon, priced between $160 to $180. These seemed like a great option, but I needed a way to integrate them into my Z-Wave ecosystem.

Here’s where things got interesting: I realized I could connect these valves to a 12-volt Z-Wave power source and trigger them using my existing water sensors. This approach would cost me around $150 for the valve and $80 for two power switches (one to open and one to close). This setup would not only save me money but also allow me to control the valve remotely.

However, I hit a snag when I realized I needed a single 12-volt Z-Wave switch with three positions: left on, right on, and off in the middle (SPDT). This would allow me to send power to either the open or close circuit or turn it off when neither function is needed. I’m now wondering if there’s a flaw in my reasoning or if this approach could work as intended.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with this type of setup. Specifically, I’m seeking recommendations for a reliable 120-volt to 12-volt Z-Wave switch that can handle the circuit requirements. Additionally, any advice on potential pitfalls or improvements to my approach would be greatly appreciated!

This project has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’m eager to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Let’s continue to innovate and share knowledge to make smart home solutions more accessible for everyone!
