Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fun project I recently worked on—an animated Energy/PV widget for OpenHAB. Inspired by the SMA Energy App and some tips from the community, I decided to create something that would visually represent my home’s energy consumption and production in a dynamic way. ![]()
After a lot of trial and error, I managed to put together a widget that shows real-time data for net consumption, PV production, battery status, and total usage. The widget uses icons and animations to make the data more engaging, and it automatically hides or shows elements based on the current energy flow. For example, if the PV system is generating more energy than needed, the battery charging icon appears! ![]()

One thing I learned is that simplicity can sometimes be overrated. While there might be more straightforward ways to display this data, I wanted something that felt interactive and informative. I also had to create custom icons for the widget, which was a fun challenge! ![]()
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried similar projects or has tips for improving this setup. Let’s keep the DIY spirit alive! ![]()
