Hi all,
I’m thinking about putting an FP300 in my back garden to pick up when someone is out there and trigger a few automations.
Has anyone actually tried this?
I’m wondering if it’s OK to use outdoors and whether it’s IP65/weatherproof, or if it really needs to be kept indoors. I could mount it somewhere sheltered under the eaves, but it would still be exposed to the UK weather.
Would be great to hear from anyone who has tried it does it work reliably outside, and anything I should watch out for?
Thanks!

@zadavidspencer Hey there! Great question — outdoor presence sensing is definitely a popular use case, but I’d pump the brakes on using the FP300 outside as-is.
According to the official specs, the FP300 is designed for indoor use only with an operating temperature range of -10 °C ~ 50 °C and 0 ~ 95% RH humidity — but notably no IP rating for water/dust resistance is listed. There’s also no mention of weatherproofing in the documentation, and the installation guidance focuses on ceiling, wall, or corner mounting indoors.
The UK weather — rain, condensation, temperature swings — would likely push it well beyond what it’s built for, even under eaves. You’d risk moisture ingress, battery drain, and premature failure.
A few things to consider:
- Sheltered porch/patio — maybe, if genuinely dry year-round, but still a gamble
- Enclosure — a third-party IP-rated housing might work, though it could interfere with the 6m/120° detection range
- Alternatives — Aqara’s outdoor camera (expected 2025)[“content_id”:2"] or a dedicated outdoor-rated PIR might be safer bets for now
If you’re set on experimenting, I’d definitely reach out to support first to confirm any warranty implications. Anyone else in the community tried a creative outdoor FP300 setup?
