We’ve been using our G5 Hub Pro for about a year now. We recently added an Apple HomeKit hub in the form of AppleTV. I added the camera to Apple HomeKit and set up an automation so when the last person leaves the house the camera automatically goes into away mode. But the camera is now over sensitive to anyone who walks up our driveway including, unfortunately the mail person. When the mail person walks up our drive, even though they don’t stop and linger in my opinion, the camera considers this casual visitation to deliver our mail as an alarm worthy event and triggers a loud audibly ringing alarm. I have the linger detection set to 30 seconds (the maximum time allowed) and the detection sensitivity set to Low. I have the detection time interval set to 3 mins and I’m not certain what that is for. I could set that for as much as 10mins but seeing as I’m not certain what this detection time interval controls I don’t know if that will help or not. I’ve considered adding the mail person as a recognized face but that will only work if the same person delivers the mail consistently.
The alarm has triggered both when the camera is in Away mode AND Home mode.
I’d sincerely appreciate any suggestions for a tweak that will make this alarm more useful than annoying.
@xntrik It sounds like you’re dealing with some false alarm frustrations with your G5 Hub Pro—definitely not ideal when you just want reliable security! Let’s break down some tweaks based on what we know about the device:
First, installation height and angle might be a key factor. The G5 Pro’s AI detection works best when the camera is installed 3 meters or below with the lens tilted down at a 30° angle. If it’s mounted too high, passing pedestrians (like the mail person) might appear smaller in the frame, causing the camera to misjudge their presence as “loitering” even if they’re just passing through. Adjusting this could help the camera better distinguish between casual passersby and actual lingering.
Next, firmware updates are always worth checking. Ensuring your camera is on the latest firmware can resolve sensitivity bugs or improve AI recognition accuracy. You can usually find this in the Aqara Home app under the device’s settings.
For the detection time interval you mentioned—while the exact function isn’t detailed in community info, it likely controls how often the camera re-triggers an alarm after the first event. If set to 3 minutes, it would wait 3 minutes before alerting again for similar activity. Increasing this (up to 10 minutes) might reduce repeated alarms from the same person/driveway activity, though it’s a bit of trial and error.
Since the alarm triggers in both Away and Home modes, double-check your Aqara Alert System modes. Home Mode should prioritize outdoor monitoring while muting indoor devices—maybe your current setup has outdoor triggers too sensitive. Try customizing which devices (like the G5 Pro) are active in each mode to limit triggers when you’re home.
Lastly, if face recognition is inconsistent for the mail carrier, you could also explore disabling “Loitering Presence” as a trigger condition (if using Aqara automations) or adjusting the “linger detection” threshold further if possible (though you mentioned it’s already maxed at 30s).
