Aqara cameras don’t recognize UniFi NAS devices

Hi Aqara team,

Is there any chance Aqara devices could support or recognize UniFi NAS systems?

A few weeks ago, I was using a different NAS (Ugreen) and was able to set it up as 24/7 storage for my G5 cameras. However, I’ve since migrated to UniFi, and my G5 cameras are unable to detect the UNAS 2.

I’ve already enabled SMB and created users with the appropriate permissions in UniFi Drive. The NAS is also discoverable by other devices on my network that support SMB.

Thanks

hi there, thanks for the feedback, we’ll review it shortly.

Yes, friend. NAS servers that support SMB protocol can be used by G5 Pro, but please note that SMB 2.0 or above protocol is required. Sometimes, it is necessary to refresh the Aqara Home page (swipe down the page to refresh) multiple times to discover NAS devices.

Hi Donie,

I SSH’d into the NAS and found that it’s running version 4.17.12-Debian, which is higher than 2.0:

Let me know if that helps.

Btw are you using IP address of the device or a hostname to connect to SMB? Because sometimes hostnames don’t work properly

The G5 doesn’t allow to add by IP it only lists what it found in network, the unifi NAS has been already set to be discovered via SMB

Check the firewall in the UniFi, maybe ports 139 and 445 are blocked somehow?

Can you use your PC to verify that only the G5 has issues with connection?

Ports are not blocked—I checked the UniFi console logs and found no indications of traffic being blocked on the local network.

I also verified from my PC that I can access the NAS via its IP address, and other services like Time Machine can successfully detect it.

There have been no changes to my network. The previous NAS (Ugreen) was discoverable by the G5, but the UniFi NAS is not.

Additionally, this issue is not limited to the G5. I tested with a G3 Pro and a G410 Doorbell as well, and none of them are able to detect the UniFi NAS.

my computer Is also able to find the NAS via smb

Ok, that really looks like an issue with Aqara devices. I fear you might have to reach to the support and they need to collect some data/logs from the cameras to fix the issue

I read a few reports on smb issues with the Unifi NAS but didn’t went to deep into reading as I don’t own a Unifi NAS. I assume the NAS is updated to the latest firmware? I also can confirm G5 is compatible with Ugreen NAS as you made the same experience

Update: I opened a support ticket, and they mentioned that UniFi NAS devices have NetBIOS disabled by default—which is correct.

I enabled NetBIOS on the NAS, restarted SMB, and voilà—the G5 cameras were able to discover the NAS and I now have 24/7 storage working.

However, the issue returns after a reboot. Once the NAS restarts, NetBIOS is no longer enabled. I’m opening another ticket with UniFi and will update this thread once I hear back from them.

Thank you for coming back and update us on this matter! Hope there’s any way to keep NetBIOS enabled after a reboot

Update/Solution:

Ubiquiti has confirmed that SMB advertising is not enabled by default on their NAS products, which is a bit disappointing since other NAS brands typically have SMB services advertised out of the box.

As a result, after every reboot I have to SSH into the NAS and manually enable SMB advertising again. Since this setting isn’t part of the default configuration, it gets reset on every power cycle.

I’ve shared this feedback with them and asked that it be escalated to the product team.

I can confirm this as well! Enabling NetBIOS on the NAS allows Aqara cameras to connect for recording. It would be great to have an option to connect the cameras directly to the NAS without needing to enable NetBIOS. Just a suggestion!
