Aqara Contact Sensor + Outdoor Cover = Reliable Side Gate Monitoring

I wanted a way to reliably monitor my side gate so I could be notified whenever it was opened, closed, or left open for too long. Aqara’s Contact Sensor made it easy — all it needed was some weather protection for outdoor use.

I found this waterproof outdoor cover on Etsy: Waterproof Outdoor Sensor Cover and mounted my Aqara Contact Sensor inside. The cover keeps it safe from rain, sun, and debris, while still allowing it to detect open/close status without interference.

Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Mounting the Sensor: I placed the larger sensor body inside the cover, mounted to the gate post. The magnet half was aligned on the swinging gate itself.
  2. Positioning for Accuracy: I tested multiple alignments to ensure the contact registered consistently when the gate was latched.
  3. Automation & Notifications:
  • Immediate alerts: I receive instant notifications in the Aqara Home app when the gate opens or closes.
  • Left-open reminders: Using Aqara automations, if the gate remains open for more than a set time (I use 3 minutes), I get a “Gate has been left open” notification.

Results:

The sensor has been working flawlessly outdoors for months, thanks to the waterproof housing. I now have peace of mind knowing when the gate is accessed — and I’m reminded if someone forgets to close it.

If anyone’s looking to use Aqara Contact Sensors outdoors, this little waterproof cover is a game changer.

Can you link the cover? That could be a solve for something I’m intending on doing soon

It is in the OpeningPost?

Btw, there is no real need to put the smaller part in the case as it is only a magnet.

Any source for the cover? Also is this picture from 1998? Lol

I tried using an IKEA contact sensor outside since it has an IP rating, but have constant connection issues. Might try to do something similar with an Aqara sensor and a case, would be helpful if you could link the one you used.

As much as I want to have a fully smart gate that I could control from either side, there aren’t many options out there for PVC fences. The one option I found was a Kickstarter and too expensive. I thought about piecing something together myself, but there were too many unknown variables. Instead, I went with an IglooHome padlock which lets me control access. The downside is that I have to keep the lock on one side of the gate for anyone that needs access from the outside, but then I can’t unlock and remove the lock to go from the inside to the outside.

The link is in the original post and the picture was zoomed it so it looks kind of crappy, but I wanted to give a visual and it was all I had at the moment.

The link is in the original post. Good luck.

Great idea, thanks for sharing it here.
