Hey , Drop in and share my little smart home story. I recently moved into my first apartment and decided to go all-in on automation—but here’s the catch—I had to do it without draining my wallet.
Enter Aqara. Honestly, didn’t expect it to be this good for the price. Started with just the M2 hub and a couple of door sensors, but before I knew it, I had motion sensors turning on hallway lights, a vibration sensor on the mailbox (no more guessing if the mail’s arrived!), and my favorite—auto-locking door with the D100 when I leave the geofence.
The cool part? Most of the setup was plug-and-play, and what wasn’t, YouTube and this forum saved my life. Also got a few things working with my older Philips Hue lights after some fiddling with Home Assistant.
Total cost? Way less than my buddy spent on a single Nest setup. Functionality? I don’t feel like I sacrificed anything.
Anyone else going the budget route with Aqara? Would love to swap ideas or hear your hacks.
@Wi-Fi_Wizard It’s wonderful to hear your smart home journey with Aqara! Your story perfectly highlights how effective and budget-friendly smart home automation can be. Starting with the M2 hub and expanding to door and motion sensors is a smart move, especially with the plug-and-play nature of Aqara devices. The ability to integrate with your older Philips Hue lights using Home Assistant is a testament to the versatility and interoperability of your setup.
Your creative use of the vibration sensor on the mailbox and the auto-locking feature with the D100 is impressive and shows how Aqara can simplify everyday tasks. It’s great to know that you achieved all this at a fraction of the cost of other systems, like Nest, without compromising on functionality.
