Aqara motion and light sensor P2 and matter

I’m using the Aqara motion and light sensor P2 which is working great and directly connected with matter over thread to my Apple Home (latest AppleTV).
I was wondering how I can update the sensor because it’s not visible in the Aqara app.

You can only update it using an Aqara Hub with Matter Controller via the Aqara Home app.

Alternatively, you can use any Thread border router to update it via Home Assistant.

Update via Apple Home is not currently supported, as far as I know, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Unfortunately so far you can’t update directly in Apple Home. I think this is a design limitation on Aqara’s side, not a lack of Apple Home or Matter capability.

Do you have an Aqara Hub? If so, what you can do is use the Matter Multi-Admin feature to also pair it to Aqara. You’ll go into the device details in Apple Home and click “Turn on Pairing.” This will generate a new code and you can pair to any additional Matter enabled ecosystem.

Ok that’s clear to me. Currently I have no actively matter device from Aqara. However my E1 hub can be converted from zigbee to matter. All devices that are linked to the E1 hub are connected through zigbee. Is it save to hit the matter integration button? Will all current zigbee devices stay connected?

I have just dismantled my E1 hub. Could you send me a screenshot to show me what you mean?

In general, the E1 is a Matter bridge that can pass ZigBee devices via Matter to other systems, such as Home Assistant, HomeKit and Google Home, as well as others that support Matter.

However, the E1 hub cannot act as a Matter controller and control or update Matter-over-Thread devices, such as the P2 motion sensor. To do this, you need a Matter controller and Thread border router from Aqara, such as the M200 hub.

Ah ok, that’s what I needed to know. So I have to look for an Aqara matter controller. Thanks for you help

This is what I see in the Aqara app

Oh, now I know what you mean.

When you press “Matter van koppelingscode,” you get the pairing code that you need to enter into another system, such as Home Assistant. After that, the devices in the system can be controlled via Matter.

Oh, and if you’re looking for an Aqara Matter Controller, keep in mind that each Aqara Hub supports a different maximum number of ZigBee and Thread devices.

  • Hub M100 = 20 Aqara Zigbee + 20 Thread
  • Hub M200 = 40 Aqara Zigbee + 40 Thread
  • Hub M3 = 127 Aqara Zigbee + 127 Thread
