Purchased the Aqara motion sensor P1 last August 2025 and the app has just reported to me that the battery is low.
Its advertised as having a 5 year battery life ?
Does this sound right.

Well, of course battery life 5 years on perfect conditions… so maybe the P1 was already some time on stock in the warehouse… where did you place the P1? Far away from the hub and cold surroundings may affect the battery life! I have one in my hallway and sure running for 4 years now

Hello, the battery charge depends on the sensitivity setting and the polling period P1. Higher sensitivity, frequent triggering - faster battery discharge. Mine works in this mode for up to 3 years.
In addition to what @DEChrisE said, the storage period in the warehouse is P1 (year of manufacture). I once bought Aqara wireless switches and replaced the batteries (two and a half years) they were stored in the warehouse.

Hi to both of you and thanks for coming back to me.
Aqara support have emailed as well so I gave them a lot of details just now.
Its about 6 -7 meters from the M3 hub. They can almost see each other, signal is excellent.
Its on a high kitchen window so does get high traffic, and is used in away mode as a security alarm when we go out.
Latest firmware.
Detection interval is 10 sec
Trigger Indicator is set to off.
Sensitivity Adjustment is set to medium

Sounds legit to me… maybe it’s just a faulty battery- replace and check the next battery life

I cleaned the battery contacts first. The P1 has a specific connector.

I’ve got to say the design of this sensor when it comes to replacing the batteries is very bad.
The bottom is easy to take off, but trying to lever the battery housing out is extremely difficult, the force required is ridiculous, and you can’t help
but cause some damage to the sensor casing.
I wish I was not having to do this so soon, but it seems because it’s in a high traffic area during the day this is why I only get a 10 month battery life.

Hello, change the polling period. If the data is only for security purposes, then you can safely set it to 30-60 seconds.

I think what they should of put in the manual for replacing the batteries is to evenly pull the battery housing out from two opposite sides, so lifting it up equally rather than it tilting using the one leverage option.
Just my ten pence worth.
If you had asked, we would have told you right away. There’s a paired battery there. By the way, did you measure the voltage with a tester?

No I never bothered checking the voltage as after a few days of low battery warning it went dead and disappeared from the app.
I’ve got it apart at the moment just waiting for Amazon to arrive, very late delivery.

If you can, try adjusting the timeout to as long as you can. 120 seconds if that is OK. This will cause it to trigger less. The device only really uses energy when it is woken up by motion. That said, I have mine set to the minimum. I also use two sensors in a group; the lights go on if one sensor sees motion and off if both are clear. If you don’t like replacing those coin cells, Ikea devices all use rechargeable AAA batteries. They also sell the rechargeable batteries and the charger. In theory, the batteries could last for well over 100 years. They have only been on the market for 10 or 15 years. After 10 years, I had one out of a dozen fail. All these companies need to follow Ikea’s example. One product like a P1 can result in tens of millions of lithium coin cells in a landfill. A product with a 100-year lifetime really does help. Then there are the AC-powered mmWave sensors that don’t use batteries.

I have set it to 1 min for now, it never updated at first but you have to press the button and then it updates.
It does not detect any motion at night or when we are out, so it’s just during the day in and out of the kitchen etc.
I’m not making any use of the daytime motion, I just arm it when out.
It’s not so much I don’t like replacing the batteries I just think the design is poor, it fitted two new Duracell batteries and they felt quite loose when I inserted them into the housing, and then I snapped it all back together again, the way it clicks back in you can understand why it’s so difficult to lever it out.
I also have the FP300 presence sensor in the living room, same kind of traffic as the kitchen so I wonder how long the batteries will last for this sensor.
I will have a look at the IKEA motion sensor thanks.
