Aqara P2 sensor not able to detect Thread border router from Google TV Streamer

Hey all!

I’ve recently bought a bunch of Aqara P2 sensors for their Matter/Thread support. I already had a Google TV Streamer, which should be Thread compatible. However, when trying to add the P2 sensor with my iPhone, the setup fails and claims no Thread Border Router Network exists.

Has anyone ran into similar issues? On the forums of the TV Streamer support there’s a couple of threads, some which claim it got resolved. But most are stale and lack details, or do not involve a Aqara sensor.

One maybe slightly “weird” part is that I don’t have one of the Aqara hubs. The entire point of going with the P2 was to have Matter, such that the open standard would make inter-operability a bit easier and avoid needing several devices to act as a border-router. [At a later point, I’ll move all sensors over to integrate with Home Assistant.]

But, to my surprise the Aqara app seems to assume you have one of their own devices acting as a border-router. Are they mandatory?

For contecxt, These are the technical details of my setup:

  • Google TV Streamer (4k), to act as Thread border router:
  • Matter-supportive sensor: Aqara P2
  • Router: AVM FRITZ!Box 7530
    • No other Threads border routers or smart-sensors are on this network
    • No firewall setup preventing device-to-device communication (verified by hosting a HTTP web-server on one laptop and accessing the web-server on another WiFi connected device by connecting to the local IP)
  • Mobile device: iPhone 12 Pro
    • Running iOS 26.0.1
    • Google Home app, latest version as per Nov. 12 (4.2.45)
    • Home app (from Apple), latest version as per Nov. 12 [no version number visible in App Store]
    • Connected over Wi-Fi to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV Streamer
    • Aqara app, latest version as per Nov. 12 (fails to setup the device too, as their flow assumes one of their self-branded border routers to be already setup before allowing you to add more devices)

For what it’s worth, here’s my longer thread on the support-forum of the TV Streamer. It’s a bit unclear on which side the integration is failing, it seems most likely to be the TV Streamer. But also trying my luck here

Before you lose more time trying with other apps, every platform requires its own Matter controller, which is typically a hub.

If your hub is the Google TV Streamer you need the Google Home app, the others will not work unless you have their Matter controllers.

The P2 should definitely work with the Streamer, my P2 door sensor connected just fine with the Nest Hub 2, which has similar features.

Thanks for the reply

Yes, it’s the TV Streamer, and yes, I’ve been primarily trying with the Google Home app.

Did venture into the other apps, but that was mostly desperation after Google Home didn’t get me anywhere .

Anyway, thanks for confirming that the Google Home app is the right thing to focus on :slightly_smiling_face:.

Hmm, interesting. Well, good to know that it does work some of their products.

There is a discussion on the Nest support forums where they claim it was a firmware issue with the TV Streamer which prevented it from working as a Threads border router. But, that didn’t seem to solve it.

So, still seems like it might be something with the TV Streamer then .

Hello @Addono
In my opinion, this is indeed a problem with the TV streamer or Google Home. Check for app and device updates. You may need to delve into the TV streamer settings and look for an option to enable Thread Border Router, as it may be disabled by default. If this doesn’t help, contact Google or Google Home support.

Google TV
go to Settings > Network & Internet on the streamer and toggle the Thread network switch

Thanks, yes I’ve been down this rabbit hole  My hunch it’s also the TV Streamer.

There were reports where Google acknowledged that firmware changes were needed, and released. Yet, that didn’t seem to do the trick.

Support there responded that it can be tracked as a bug, so in case anyone is stumbling on this thread later, that is now created under:
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/460404086

Let’s see where this is going to go.

Thanks for all the answers so far, if it is supposed to work, then I’ll see where Google’s support will get me :slightly_smiling_face:.

Something I did try originally, but don’t remember if I did it also after the last firmware update :man_shrugging:.

Just gave it another try, sadly no luck  .

Final wrap-up:

Ticket is still open with Google support, they’ve not been able to reproduce my issues.

I’ve gotten myself a ZBT-2, and the Aqara P2 connects without issues.

Thanks all for the input and support, cheers!
