Aqara Smart Lock U400 on Android/Home Assistant (Montreal Winter Experience)

**Honest Review: **

User Profile: Android User | Home Assistant (Matter over Thread) | Cold Climate (Canada)

I’ve been testing the new Aqara Smart Lock U400 in my main house for about a month now, and I wanted to share some “real-world” feedback, especially for those of us who aren’t in the Apple ecosystem and live in northern climates.

1. Installation & Home Assistant Integration

As an Android user, I’m not using UWB or Home Key (no HomePod/Apple TV here). I integrated the lock directly into Home Assistant via Matter over Thread.

  • The Good: It works flawlessly for automations. I have it set up to trigger my Kasa lights when I unlock it at night.
  • Door Status: The built-in sensor is great. I’ve set up a “nag” notification in HA to ping my Android phone if the door is left open for more than 5 mins—essential for keeping the heat in during the Montreal winter.

2. Fingerprint Performance

Since I don’t use UWB, the fingerprint sensor is my primary entry method. Even with the cold weather, it is incredibly fast (feels like less than half a second) and very accurate. It hasn’t struggled with “winter skin” or the temperature drops we get here.

3. The “Montreal Winter” Battery Surprise

This is where I’m most impressed. Aqara usually quotes 6 months, but after one full month of use in freezing temperatures, my battery is still at 94%.

  • If this trend continues, I’m looking at 14-16 months of battery life.
  • Because the battery is on the interior side of the door, the Quebec cold doesn’t seem to drain it like other smart locks I’ve used.

4. My One “Wish List” Item

I really wish Aqara would sell the battery packs separately by default. I’d love to have a second one charged and ready to “hot-swap” so I never have to hang a power bank or USB cable from my door lock to charge it.

Final Verdict: If you are an Android/Home Assistant user, don’t let the “Apple-first” marketing scare you off. It’s a robust, fast, and battery-efficient lock for cold climates.

Thanks / Merci for posting this, I’m in Montreal too and was wondering all that you reported on. I have the G410 doorbell and had to wire it in, the batteries didn’t last a week in -20 weather. Once the doorbell actually gave me a notification telling me it’s too cold.

My primary concern, though minor given the extended battery life, pertains to the charging options for the lock:

  1. Direct connection of a battery pack to the lock.
  2. Removal of the battery for USB-C charging.
  3. Acquisition of an additional battery for hot-swapping.
