Aqara Smart Lock U50 – Second Critical Failure. Looking for Advice from the Community (Apple HomeKit + Aqara Ecosystem)

Hello everyone,

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. This is my very first post on the Aqara Community Forum, and unfortunately, I am doing so because I am facing what has become the most serious issue I have experienced since I began building my Aqara smart home.

I have invested heavily in the Aqara ecosystem because I genuinely believe it is currently one of the best solutions available for Apple HomeKit users. My home is centered around Apple Home, with an Apple TV 4K acting as the Home Hub, HomePod minis, an Aqara Hub M3, an Aqara Hub M100, a Camera Hub G410, multiple sensors, switches, cameras, and other Aqara accessories. Until now, my experience with the ecosystem has been overwhelmingly positive.

Unfortunately, my Aqara Smart Lock U50 has become the only device that has repeatedly presented serious problems, and I would sincerely appreciate hearing from anyone who may have experienced something similar.

How everything started

The first signs of trouble appeared some time ago.

Initially, the lock remained visible in both Aqara Home and Apple Home, but I began noticing strange behavior regarding its status reporting.

For example, Aqara Home would sometimes indicate that the lock was unlocked, even though it was physically locked.

Although this was already concerning, the lock itself still functioned.

The keypad worked.

The lock produced sounds.

Voice prompts were still present.

Reset procedures still generated responses.

At that point I believed the issue was simply related to calibration or synchronization.

The first recovery

After many attempts and considerable time spent troubleshooting, I eventually managed to recover the lock.

Everything returned to normal.

Because of that, I assumed the problem had simply been an isolated firmware or synchronization issue.

Unfortunately, that assumption turned out to be wrong.

The problem returned

Some time later, exactly the same symptoms began appearing again.

The incorrect lock status returned.

Apple Home began behaving inconsistently.

The lock eventually disappeared from Apple Home while it continued appearing inside Aqara Home.

However, Aqara Home still indicated that the accessory was linked to HomeKit.

This created a very strange situation.

Apple no longer recognized the lock correctly.

Aqara believed it was still linked.

Neither platform was behaving consistently.

Contacting Aqara Support

At this point I contacted Aqara Support.

I want to take a moment to thank the support team.

Throughout this entire process they have been professional, courteous, patient, and genuinely willing to help.

They carefully reviewed my case and provided detailed recovery instructions, including both the standard reset procedure and the alternative SET + RESET recovery procedure for newer firmware versions.

I truly appreciate the effort they have dedicated to helping me.

Unfortunately, despite following every instruction exactly as recommended, the problem only became worse.

Every troubleshooting step I performed

Over the course of several days I attempted virtually every recovery procedure available.

Among other things, I:

  • replaced all batteries with a brand-new set;
  • removed the batteries for extended periods;
  • performed the normal factory reset;
  • performed the alternative SET + RESET procedure described by Aqara Support;
  • attempted lock recalibration;
  • verified the Hub M3 connection;
  • confirmed that the firmware was fully updated;
  • confirmed communication with the hub before removing the accessory;
  • attempted to reconnect Apple Home;
  • attempted to restore HomeKit binding.

None of these procedures solved the problem.

HomeKit became impossible to restore

Since the lock had disappeared from Apple Home, I removed it from Apple’s Home app.

However, Aqara Home continued reporting that the lock was still linked to Apple HomeKit.

Because of that inconsistency, every attempt to add the lock back into Apple Home resulted in Apple’s message saying:

“The accessory has already been added to another home.”

Meanwhile, Aqara still believed it remained linked.

I could neither re-add it nor completely remove the HomeKit association.

Eventually, after exhausting every other option, I removed the lock from Aqara Home as well, hoping to start from scratch.

The current situation

Unfortunately, removing the lock only made everything significantly worse.

At the time of writing this post, the lock is no longer present in either application.

It has completely disappeared from:

  • Apple Home
  • Aqara Home

Even more concerning is the lock’s current physical behavior.

It no longer responds at all.

There are:

  • no sounds;
  • no voice prompts;
  • no keypad response;
  • no LEDs;
  • no confirmation beeps;
  • no reaction to either reset procedure.

It behaves as if it were completely powered off.

New batteries made no difference

To eliminate the possibility of a power issue, I purchased a completely new set of AA batteries.

Those batteries arrived today.

I installed them immediately.

Unfortunately, absolutely nothing changed.

The lock still behaves exactly the same.

No response whatsoever.

Even the Aqara NFC Card stopped working

Before the lock became completely unresponsive, I had successfully configured an official Aqara NFC card.

That card previously unlocked the door perfectly.

Today it no longer works either.

The lock simply ignores every attempt.

This is what worries me the most

At this point I no longer believe this is merely:

  • a HomeKit synchronization issue;
  • a calibration problem;
  • or a firmware configuration problem.

The complete lack of any physical response from the device makes me wonder whether the lock may have suffered:

  • a critical firmware failure,
  • an internal hardware failure,
  • or some other unknown condition preventing the system from even booting correctly.

Why I decided to post here

I am sharing my experience because I would genuinely like to know whether anyone else within the Aqara Community has ever experienced a similar situation with the Smart Lock U50.

Specifically:

  • Has anyone had a U50 become completely unresponsive?
  • Has anyone lost every form of interaction with the lock?
  • Has anyone experienced HomeKit reporting that the accessory still belonged to another home even after removal?
  • Has anyone recovered a lock that no longer produced sounds or responded to reset procedures?

If so, I would sincerely appreciate learning what ultimately solved the issue.

Final thoughts

Despite this unfortunate experience, I remain a strong supporter of Aqara products.

My home is built almost entirely around the Aqara ecosystem because I truly believe your products offer one of the best integrations available for Apple Home users.

That is precisely why this issue has been so disappointing.

I genuinely hope this problem can still be resolved, either through additional troubleshooting or, if necessary, through another solution recommended by Aqara.

Finally, I would once again like to thank the Aqara Support Team for their professionalism, patience, and willingness to help throughout this process. Although we have not yet reached a solution, I truly appreciate the time and effort they have invested in my case.

Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to read this rather long post.

Any suggestions, experiences, or advice from fellow Aqara users would be sincerely appreciated. I am open to trying any reasonable solution that might help bring my U50 back to life.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.Well quite a story and I am really sorry to hear that your smart lock is not working as it should.
-now first thing first did you check on settings/general on the matter devices see if the lock it is still there as adding matter/thread devices will store them there too and that is why you get that error telling that you unlock is added on another home.check this first and tell me if is there and if is then eliminate it from there.lets make this steep by steep.also do you use ios27 beta?how many routers do you use on your home?asking all this as there my be so connection issue between or Apple devices and the Aqara smart lock.
-second steep will be to turn off the electricity on you home for 1/2 min so the Apple devices reset the thread connection.
-3th steep is to add again the smart lock again to aqara home app and after is added see if works from there first and if all works then add it to Apple home app but here as I mention you need to check if there is still listed on settings/general/Matter accessories.

Let’s start working backwards.

Now that the lock is removed from all Ecosystems it is a blank slate. I would not expect an NFC card or any previous unlock methods to work at this point as users, pins, and keys are likely removed.

You tried doing a reset earlier in your troubleshooting. Can you try that again now? Is the lock responsive to the reset button? Hold it down until it prompts you to pair again and start fresh.

Now - assuming you can pair it again this doesn’t get to the root of your original issue, which I would almost certainly guess is a connectivity issue. How close is the Aqara hub it is paired to (M3) to establish Zigbee connection?

Hi coccolino_26,

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post and for your detailed suggestions. I really appreciate your help.

Regarding your questions:

  • I am currently using the iOS 27 Public Beta.
  • My home network consists of a T-Mobile Home Internet Gateway, a T-Mobile Mesh unit, an Apple TV 4K as my primary Home Hub, two HomePod mini speakers, an Aqara Hub M3, an Aqara Hub M100, and an Aqara G410 Doorbell Hub.

I did check the Matter accessories section in my iPhone settings during the troubleshooting process. Unfortunately, removing the lock from Matter did not resolve the issue.

Before removing the lock from Aqara Home, my iPhone was still able to communicate with the lock over Bluetooth. However, the Aqara app always reported that the lock was already linked to an Apple Home, preventing me from adding it again.

The reason I eventually removed the lock from Aqara Home was because this was already the second occurrence of the same issue. The lock repeatedly showed “Unknown Status” and always appeared as Unlocked/Open, even when it was physically locked.

Unfortunately, after removing it from Aqara Home and attempting another factory reset with a brand-new set of batteries, the lock became completely unresponsive.

At this point there are:

  • no LEDs,
  • no beeps,
  • no sounds,
  • no keypad response,
  • and no response from any of the rear buttons.

I am currently working with Aqara Technical Support by email and will also post any important updates here in case they help other users in the future.

Thank you again for your time and suggestions.

Hi Robert,

Thank you very much for your reply and for taking the time to review my case.

Regarding your questions:

The lock has now been removed from both Apple Home and the Aqara Home app.

I also repeated the factory reset procedure after removing it from all ecosystems.

Unfortunately, the result was exactly the same.

The lock is now completely unresponsive.

Specifically:

  • no LEDs,
  • no beeps,
  • no sounds,
  • no keypad response,
  • and none of the three rear buttons produce any response during the reset procedure.

I also installed a completely new set of six AA batteries before performing these tests, so the batteries should not be the cause.

Regarding the Aqara Hub M3, it is located only a short distance from the lock and the Zigbee connection had always been stable before this problem started.

What makes this case particularly unusual is that this is actually the second time I have experienced the same issue.

The lock first began reporting “Unknown Status” while always appearing as Unlocked/Open, even though it was physically locked.

Only after multiple troubleshooting attempts did I remove it from the ecosystems in an attempt to perform a completely fresh setup.

I am also currently working with Aqara Technical Support via email and will update this thread with any new findings.

Thank you again for your assistance.
