I just purchased and installed my Aqara U400 Smart Lock about a week ago. Previously I was using Level Lock+ smart locks. I was initially drawn to the Level Lock’s because of its HomeKit compatibility, and its design of keeping everything inside the actual lock, giving it the look of a normal deadbolt. What I didn’t realize is that would have some serious trade-offs. The battery life was atrocious and the reliability just as poor. I found myself more frustrated. Finally, when the battery died again without notice, I decided to make a change. I heard about the new U400 lock from CES2026 videos. The UltraWideband functionality is really what drew me to this.
After installing the lock, I was instantly pleased and happy with my decision to switch. The U400 lock is so fast, so reliable, and has many more features than my previous lock before with the Level Lock. I would have to wait sometimes 10, 15, 20 seconds before it would recognize I was in range and automatically unlock. With the U400 it is near instantaneous when I approach the door. The other thing I like is that it won’t unlock until I approach the door where the Level Lock would sometimes unlock when I was out on the sidewalk, which isn’t ideal for security if I’m going for a walk in my neighborhood. another significant improvement is with the Apple home key functionality with the Level Lock. I would need to open up my Wallet app, verify with Face ID, and then hold my phone to lock. I was lucky if it read the key from my phone but most times I had to put my phone in odd positions just for it to finally read it. With the U400, I don’t even need to open my Wallet app, just hold my phone to the lock, and it instantly reads it and unlocks it. Extremely fast and reliable.
The fingerprint sensor is great too. For the off chance I don’t have my phone or watch with me, a simple tap of my finger gets me in.
It’s also great that this has a built-in code display. The level lock requires a separate device, and that too is very flakey.
I definitely don’t usually speak poorly of competitors products, but I feel it’s important for those weighing different options to understand my full experience and the night and day experience between these two locks. I highly recommend the U400 over any other lock.
I can’t wait to try out more Aqara devices, as my next conversion will be from Ring doorbells to Aqara.
