When I first started my smart home, I added a motion sensor and a smart bulb (both Aqara), connected through an Aqara Hub, in my laundry room, and it turned out to be one of the simplest but most useful things I set up.
The automation is basic: the light turns on when motion is detected, and turns off automatically after 15 minutes of no movement. That’s it — no complicated routines, no manual scheduling.
What surprised me was how much friction it removed from everyday life. I used to walk in with a laundry basket, fumble for the switch with my hands full, and forget to turn the light off half the time. Now I just walk in and the light is already on, and I never have to think about turning it off again.
My advice for beginners: don’t overlook small, “boring” spaces like laundry rooms, closets, or hallways when picking your first automation. They’re low-stakes (nothing bad happens if the timing isn’t perfect), cheap to set up, and the payoff in daily convenience is surprisingly high compared to more complex automations. It’s a great first project to learn the basics before tackling anything bigger.
