Automating Garage Door Closure with Shelly and Home Assistant

I’ve been tinkering with my garage door setup lately and wanted to share my journey in case anyone else is looking to automate their garage door closure after it’s been open for a certain period of time. :fire_engine::sparkles:

So, here’s the deal: I set my Shelly relay’s auto-off time to 0.5 seconds, mimicking a momentary press. The goal is to have the garage door close automatically if it’s still open after, say, 30 minutes. I’m using a Reed switch with the Shelly Add-On to detect the door’s position. While I haven’t implemented this yet, I’m really excited about the possibilities!

I initially thought this might require some custom coding or complex automation, but after some research, I realized Home Assistant could handle it seamlessly. The idea is to use Home Assistant’s automation capabilities to monitor the door’s state and trigger the closure after the specified time. :european_castle::bulb:

One thing I’m curious about is whether there are any potential issues with the relay timing or the Reed switch’s sensitivity. I want to make sure the system is reliable and doesn’t cause any unintended behavior, like closing the door while someone is still entering or exiting. Safety first, right? :shield:

I’ve also come across some really helpful resources in the community about integrating Shelly devices with Home Assistant. It looks like there are some great automations and scripts that can make this process even smoother. I’m planning to dive into those and see if I can tweak them to fit my specific setup. :books::sparkles:

If anyone has experience with similar automations or tips on ensuring smooth operation, I’d love to hear about it! Let’s brainstorm together and make our garage doors as smart as possible. :rocket:
