I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home security and outdoor lighting setup, and I’m thrilled to share my recent success with automating floodlights using smart cameras and plugs. 
The Scenario:
I have a camera set up over my garage door to monitor activity. My goal was to create a system where the camera detects a car, triggers the floodlights to turn on, and then shuts them off after a preset time. This would not only improve security but also save energy by ensuring lights aren’t left on unnecessarily.
The Setup:
With 8 cameras and 14 smart plugs, I envisioned a network of automated scenarios. The key was integrating the camera’s motion detection with the smart plugs. When the camera detects a car, it sends a signal to the plug, which then activates the floodlights. After a set period (like 10 minutes), the lights automatically turn off.
The Outcome:
It’s been a game-changer! Not only does this system provide better visibility at night, but it also reduces energy waste. The preset time interval ensures lights aren’t left on longer than needed. Plus, having this automation in place gives me peace of mind, especially when I’m away from home.
