Automating Hallway Lighting with Smart Door Sensors

Hello everyone, I’m currently exploring ways to enhance my home’s automation system, and I thought I’d share my journey with you. One of my main goals is to have the hallway lights turn on automatically when I open the front door, and then be able to switch them off manually using a wall switch. This seems like a straightforward idea, but I’m encountering a few challenges along the way.

First, let me explain the setup. The hallway lights are currently controlled by a traditional wall switch, which is connected to the main distribution board. This makes it an ideal candidate for integrating with Homematic, as I already use it for my roller shutters and heating system. The challenge lies in detecting when the front door is opened. I know that Homematic offers door contacts for windows and garden gates, but I’m not sure if they have one specifically designed for the front door. Plus, I need to ensure that the lights only turn on when the door is opened from the outside, not when I’m leaving the house from the inside.

I’ve considered using a motion detector, but unfortunately, my cats are quite active, and I don’t want them triggering the lights unnecessarily. This brings me back to the idea of a door contact sensor. I’ve done some research and found that Homematic does offer door contacts, but I’m still unsure about how to configure them properly to avoid false triggers. I’m also concerned about the wiring and whether it will be compatible with my existing setup.

Another thought I had is about the integration with my CCU3. I already use it for my roller shutters and heating, so maybe there’s a way to extend its functionality to include door sensors. I’m wondering if there are any specific settings or scripts I need to create to make this work seamlessly. I’ve come across some forums where people have successfully integrated door sensors with their CCU3, but I’m not entirely sure how to replicate their solutions.

I’m also curious about the power consumption and reliability of these sensors. I want to make sure that they are durable and won’t require frequent maintenance. I’ve heard that some sensors can be finicky, especially in areas with a lot of electromagnetic interference, so I need to choose something robust.

If anyone has experience with setting up door sensors for front doors or has any tips on how to integrate them with Homematic, I would greatly appreciate your insights. I’m also interested in knowing if there are any alternative solutions that might be more suitable for my setup. Thanks in advance for your help, and I look forward to hearing from you!
