Automating Home Security for My Mom: A Success Story

As someone who’s always looking for ways to make life easier, especially for loved ones, I wanted to share my recent experience setting up an automated lighting system for my mom. She’s in her seventies and lives alone, which has made her increasingly concerned about home security after a recent break-in nearby.

My goal was to create a system that would deter potential intruders without being too intrusive or complicated for her to use. After doing some research, I decided to go with a combination of smart lighting and voice control since she’s already quite comfortable with her Alexa devices.

I started by selecting plug-in smart lights that she could easily install herself. These lights are controlled through Alexa routines, which means she can simply say, ‘Alexa, goodnight,’ and the system will turn on lights in a random pattern, giving the illusion that someone is home. This feature alone has given her peace of mind.

For added convenience, I also set up motion sensors that trigger specific lights when movement is detected. The best part is that these sensors are battery-powered, so there’s no need for any wiring, which was a huge plus given her house was built in the 1950s.

I must say, seeing her confidently use these devices and feeling safer has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a small way to give her some peace of mind while keeping things simple and user-friendly. If anyone has tips or suggestions for enhancing this setup, I’d love to hear them!
