Automating Ice Monitoring with SmartThings

As a member of a curling club, I’ve been trying to find a reliable way to monitor our chiller system. The chiller is crucial for maintaining the ice surface, but it occasionally turns off on its own, requiring a manual restart. We currently use a remote camera to check its status, but we’d love to automate this process with SmartThings. Here’s what I’ve been thinking:

  1. Decibel Level Monitoring: The chiller is quite loud when running, so detecting a drop in noise could signal a shutdown. I’m curious if SmartThings can monitor decibel levels effectively.

  2. Vibration Detection: The chiller vibrates when operational. A vibration sensor could potentially detect when it’s off. I’m wondering how sensitive these sensors need to be for this application.

  3. Temperature Drop Detection: Monitoring the temperature of the ice or refrigerant lines could help identify when the chiller stops. If there’s a significant drop in temperature over a short period, it would indicate a problem.

I’d love to hear if anyone has successfully implemented similar solutions or has suggestions on how to approach this with SmartThings. It would be amazing to get an automated alert system up and running to save time and ensure our facility runs smoothly!

Curious to hear your thoughts!
