Automating Legacy LED Lights with Govee: My Experience

I recently decided to upgrade my kitchen lighting setup by automating my legacy LED lights using Govee products. The idea was to replace the cumbersome manual switching with a more convenient and modern solution. I chose the Govee H5080 Square Smart Plug, Motion Sensor, and Smart Button for this project. Here’s how it went!

Setup and Initial Thoughts
I connected the LED strip to the Govee H5080 smart plug, which I placed alongside the extractor fan. The plug has been working seamlessly, allowing me to control the lights via the Govee app. The motion sensor was installed to automatically turn on the lights when I enter the kitchen, and the smart button provides manual control for those times when I prefer not to use the app.

Challenges Faced
One challenge I encountered was ensuring that the motion sensor only activates during nighttime. After some research, I discovered that while the motion sensor itself doesn’t have a built-in timer, I could integrate it with a smart scene in the Govee app to achieve the desired behavior. This involved setting up a schedule that deactivates the motion sensor during daylight hours.

Unexpected Benefits
I was pleasantly surprised by how responsive the smart plug is. It consistently reacts to commands from both the motion sensor and the smart button. The app interface is user-friendly, making it easy to set up scenes and schedules. This integration has significantly improved my daily routine, especially in the evenings when I’m preparing meals.

Tips for Others
If you’re considering a similar setup, I recommend thoroughly testing each component before fully integrating them. Also, take some time to explore the app’s features to maximize the system’s potential. A little experimentation can go a long way in tailoring the system to your specific needs.

Overall, I’m thrilled with how this project turned out. It’s a great example of how smart home devices can enhance convenience and comfort in our daily lives. I’m already brainstorming other areas in my home where I can apply similar automation techniques!
