Automating Music Playback for Family Arrivals

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and one feature I’ve been really excited about is setting up music to play when my family arrives home. It’s such a warm and welcoming touch, and I wanted to share my journey and tips with the community.

Initially, I tried using Amazon Alexa to trigger music on my Echo Dot. It was a simple setup, but unfortunately, it didn’t work as expected. I suspect it might have been a regional issue since I couldn’t get Alexa to play anything consistently. Frustrated but not deterred, I decided to explore other options.

Next, I invested in a Google Chromecast and paired it with Plex for music streaming. This setup allowed me to play music through my TV, but it came with its own set of challenges. The system was quite unstable, and I often had to manually switch on the TV before starting the music. It wasn’t the seamless experience I was hoping for, but it was a step in the right direction.

After some research, I discovered the Shelly 1 Plus. It’s been a game-changer for me. I integrated it with my existing setup and created a simple automation: when my family’s smartphones come within range, the Shelly triggers the Chromecast to play a pre-selected playlist. The best part? It all happens automatically without any manual intervention.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Setup the Shelly 1 Plus: I connected it to my home network and paired it with the Google Home app.
  2. Create a Routine: Using Google’s automation features, I set it to detect when specific devices (my family’s phones) are nearby.
  3. Trigger Music Playback: Once detected, the routine activates the Chromecast to play music through my TV speakers.

The result? A seamless, automated system that greets my family with their favorite tunes as they walk in the door. It’s not just convenient; it adds a personal touch to our daily routine.

For anyone looking to achieve something similar, I’d recommend starting simple and gradually building up. Tools like IFTTT or Hubitat’s Rule Machine can be incredibly helpful for creating these automations. Also, don’t hesitate to experiment with different devices and apps until you find the perfect setup for your home.

Smart home automation is all about enhancing convenience and comfort, and this little project has definitely brightened our days. I’d love to hear how others have automated music playback or other welcoming features in their homes!
