Hey everyone! I just wanted to share my recent project of automating my half-bath. It’s been a lot of fun, and I thought I’d walk through what I did and maybe get some feedback or tips from you all.
So, the goal was to make the lights and fan turn on automatically when I walk in and turn off when I leave. I have these devices connected to a GE switch, so I needed to figure out the best way to set this up. I came across a few options online—using a motion sensor, a door sensor, or both.
I decided to go with both a motion sensor and a door sensor. The motion sensor is great for detecting when someone enters, but I also wanted the door sensor as a backup in case the motion sensor misses something, especially if the door is left open for a bit.
Setting it up was pretty straightforward. I connected the motion sensor to the ceiling and placed the door sensor on the door frame. Then, I programmed the system to trigger the lights and fan when either sensor detects movement or the door opens.
One thing I was worried about was false triggers, like if the lights stayed on when no one was in the bathroom. But so far, it’s been working perfectly! The system turns off after a few minutes of inactivity, which I set using a simple timer in the automation app.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has any tips to make this even more efficient. It’s amazing how much these little projects can make your home feel smarter and more convenient. Thanks for reading, and happy automating! ![]()
