Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of home automation for a while now, and I’m really excited to share some of my experiences and tips. I’ve been working on automating my home to make my daily life a bit smoother, and it’s been quite an adventure.
One of the things I’ve been focusing on is automating my window treatments. I have these horizontal shutters that I wanted to control based on the outdoor light levels. I’ve got them hooked up to a Shelly 2.5, which allows me to set them to specific percentages. I’ve created a few scripts to set them to slightly open positions—1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%. The idea is to let in just the right amount of light without letting in too much direct sunlight.
I’ve paired this with a Xiaomi luminance sensor placed right by the window. The sensor measures the light levels, and based on that, it triggers the shutters to open or close. For example, if the light levels go above 1400 lux, the shutters open to 1%. If it drops below 500 lux, they close slightly to 4%. This setup works pretty well, but there’s one issue I’m trying to tackle. On cloudy days, the light levels fluctuate a lot, which causes the shutters to open and close frequently. It’s a bit annoying, but I understand it’s because the sensor is reacting to the changing light conditions.
I’ve been experimenting with different light thresholds to see if I can reduce the frequency of the shutters moving. Maybe adjusting the thresholds a bit higher or lower could help. I’d love to hear if anyone else has dealt with similar issues and how they’ve managed to solve them.
Another thing I’ve been working on is setting up notifications for my iPhone. I’ve got Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi, and I wanted to make sure I could get notifications directly on my phone. I had to enable notifications in the Home Assistant app and make sure my phone was recognized by the system. It took a bit of tweaking, but now I can receive notifications for things like motion detection or when my energy usage goes above a certain threshold. It’s been really helpful in keeping me informed about what’s going on at home even when I’m not there.
I’ve also been exploring different ways to control my lights. I’ve got a bunch of LIFX bulbs, and I’ve been using them to create different scenes. For example, I’ve got a ‘Good Night’ scene that dims the lights and turns on a nightlight in the hallway. It’s been great for winding down at the end of the day. I’ve also been experimenting with using voice commands to control them, which has been a lot of fun.
One thing I’m still trying to figure out is how to handle multiple devices from different brands. I’ve got a mix of Zigbee and Wi-Fi devices, and sometimes they don’t play nicely together. I’ve been looking into using CoRE to create some custom automations, but I’m still getting the hang of it. If anyone has tips on integrating devices from different ecosystems, I’d love to hear them!
Overall, my journey into home automation has been really rewarding. There’s something so satisfying about coming home and having everything set up just the way I like it. It’s definitely a learning process, but I’m loving every minute of it. I can’t wait to see what other cool things I can add to my setup in the future!
