Automating My Kitchen: A Fun Challenge!

Hey everyone, I’m super excited to share my recent project—automating my kitchen! :fried_egg::sparkles: It’s been a blast figuring out how to make my cooking routine smoother and more efficient. Let me walk you through my journey and maybe you’ll get some ideas for your own setup!

First off, my main goal was to create a system that would remind me when my eggs were done boiling. I’ve had a few incidents where I forgot about them, leading to some pretty messy clean-ups. So, I decided to use a combination of sensors and smart plugs to monitor the stove.

I started by setting up a temperature sensor near the stove. This sensor detects when the stove is on and sends an alert to my phone after a certain amount of time. But I wanted more than just an alert—I wanted the stove to automatically turn off if I wasn’t around! :arrows_counterclockwise:

To achieve this, I connected my stove’s power outlet to a smart plug. The plug is controlled by my smart hub, which monitors the stove’s status through the temperature sensor. If the stove is left on for too long without any motion detected in the kitchen, the plug turns off the stove and sends me a notification. It’s been a lifesaver! :stop_sign::fire:

Another cool feature I added was a countdown timer linked to my smart lights. When I start cooking, I set the timer, and the lights dim after a few minutes as a subtle reminder to check on my food. It’s such a simple touch, but it makes a big difference! :bulb:

I also integrated my microwave into the system. Now, when I start cooking, the microwave timer automatically syncs with my stove timer. It’s all about creating a seamless experience! :iphone:

Of course, there were some hurdles along the way. For instance, getting the sensors to work reliably took some tweaking. I had to adjust their placement a few times to ensure accurate readings. But with a bit of trial and error, everything fell into place! :hammer_and_wrench:

If you’re thinking about automating your kitchen, here are a few tips:

  • Start small. Begin with one or two features and gradually add more as you get comfortable.
  • Invest in good quality sensors and smart plugs. They make all the difference in reliability.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment! Some of my best solutions came from just trying things out.

I’d love to hear about your kitchen automation projects or any tips you have! Let’s share and inspire each other! :rocket:
