Automating My Reclining Couch: A Fun DIY Project

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun project I’ve been working on with my new reclining couches. I recently purchased two of these beauties for my living room, and each has two seats with individual toggle switches for the main recline and headrest adjustments. While they’re super comfortable, I noticed that the kids often leave them in the upright position, and I’d love to be able to adjust them remotely or even automatically when I trigger my ‘Goodnight’ routine.

I’m pretty handy with electronics, so I started brainstorming how to integrate these into my SmartThings setup. My initial thought was to use a Z-Wave relay wired in parallel with each switch, but I also want to incorporate some sort of tilt sensor to track the recline percentage. This way, I could control the recline like a dimmer switch, with full ‘On’ being the fully reclined position and ‘Off’ bringing it back to upright. It would be awesome if the app could display a percentage, too!

I’ve been researching switches, controllers, and sensors that could work for this. Does anyone have experience with a single device that can handle both the switching and the sensing? I’m leaning towards using a Z-Wave relay for the switching part and maybe an accelerometer for the tilt sensing. I’d love to hear if anyone has tackled a similar project or has any tips or tricks!

This project has been a great way to dive deeper into home automation while making my living space even more comfortable. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together and how it enhances my daily routine. Stay tuned for updates, and feel free to share your thoughts or suggestions!
