Automating Old-School Light Switches: A Creative Solution

Hey everyone, I’ve been struggling with a fun challenge in my home automation journey. My wife and I have been debating for years over how to automate our old-school light switches without losing that classic toggle feel. She’s all about the simplicity of flipping a switch, while I’m trying to modernize our setup without making her feel like she’s lost a piece of the past.

I stumbled upon a use case that could be a game-changer for us. In my basement, we’ve got an Innovelli blue switch hooked up to a resistor, which acts as a trigger for our Hubitat system. It works, but it’s not exactly elegant. I’ve been searching for a way to connect an old-school switch to our smart system so that when the power is applied, it sends an event to Hubitat, and when power is cut, it sends another event. This would allow us to control the lights seamlessly while keeping the switch itself intact.

I’m curious if anyone has tackled this before or has any creative ideas. Maybe there’s a device or a workaround that I haven’t discovered yet. If I could find a solution, it would be a win-win for both of us—preserving the classic switch while integrating it into our smart home setup.

Let me know if anyone has any insights or experiences to share! Domestic tranquility awaits!
