Automating Outdoor Lighting and Security with Shelly and Govee

I’ve recently embarked on a project to automate my outdoor lighting and security system, and I wanted to share my experiences and insights with the community. My goal was to create a seamless and responsive system that enhances both functionality and aesthetics. Here’s how it unfolded!

The Vision
I moved to a larger property with extensive outdoor areas, including a long driveway and a large front gate. The pitch-black nights made me realize the need for better lighting. I envisioned a system where the lights would fade up as the gate opens, creating a welcoming ambiance. The reverse would happen when the gate closes, ensuring security and energy efficiency.

The Components
I decided to use Shelly devices for their reliability and integration capabilities. The Shelly TRV and Shelly EM sensors were perfect for monitoring and controlling temperature and energy usage. For lighting, I opted for Govee products, which offer a great balance of price and performance. Their RGB strips added a touch of elegance to the outdoor areas.

The Setup

  1. Gate Automation: I integrated the gate controller with Shelly switches, allowing the system to detect when the gate opens or closes. This triggers the lights along the driveway to fade up or down, creating a smooth transition.
  2. Lighting Control: Using Govee’s app, I programmed the lights to change colors based on the time of day and events. For instance, warm whites in the evening and vibrant colors during parties.
  3. Energy Monitoring: The Shelly EM sensors track energy usage, helping me optimize consumption and reduce costs.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Integration with Home Assistant: Initially, I faced issues connecting Shelly devices with Home Assistant. However, using the MQTT protocol and configuring the right settings resolved most problems.
  • Light Stability: The Govee lights occasionally showed unstable readings. Updating their firmware and adjusting the sensor settings stabilized the system.

Tips and Tricks

  • Firmware Updates: Regularly update device firmware to ensure optimal performance and security.
  • Sensor Placement: Experiment with sensor placement to get accurate readings and avoid interference.
  • Scene Programming: Create different scenes in the Govee app for various occasions, making it easy to switch between settings.

The Outcome
This project has transformed my outdoor space into a secure and visually appealing area. The integration of Shelly and Govee devices has been seamless, and the system’s responsiveness has exceeded my expectations. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m excited to explore more automation possibilities in the future!
