I quickly realized that not all devices work seamlessly together. For example, I initially tried using a budget-friendly Zigbee sensor, but it didn’t integrate well with my existing ecosystem. After some research, I switched to a more reliable brand that was compatible with my setup.2. Sensor Placement: Finding the right spots for motion sensors and leak detectors was tricky. I learned that placement is key—sensors need to cover the entire area without overlapping too much or leaving gaps.3. Automation Setup: Creating the perfect automations took time. I wanted the basement to lock up securely when not in use but also be easily accessible when needed. After some trial and error, I settled on a system that locks the door after 10 minutes of inactivity and sends me a notification if it’s left open.### The Solutions1. Device Selection: I ended up choosing a mix of trusted brands. For lighting, I went with Lutron Caseta for its reliability and sleek design. For security, I opted for Ring cameras and Arlo floodlights for their excellent video quality and integration capabilities.2. Smart Locks: I installed a Schlage Connect smart lock. It’s been a game-changer. I can control access remotely, set temporary codes for guests, and receive notifications whenever the door is opened or closed.3. Leak Detection: I integrated a Wyze water sensor near the laundry area. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I’ll be alerted immediately if there’s a leak.### The ResultsThe basement now feels like a safe and connected space. I can monitor it from anywhere, control the lights with voice commands, and automate routines to lock up when I’m not there.
