When you’re just starting out for best compatibility, it is smart to look at devices that use Matter and Thread. Also, it can be very helpful to have devices that are not on Wi-Fi. They seem to be a little bit more reliable. I have also found that it is best to use in-wall light switches instead of smart bulbs, whatever possible.

@iburkhart13 Totally agree with this approach—starting with Matter over Thread is a solid “future-proof” move, and it’s nice not having every device fighting for Wi‑Fi airtime.

You’ll still want the right “hub” layer for Thread/Matter: Thread devices need a Matter Controller + Thread Border Router to join a Thread network and show up in your ecosystem (Aqara Home, Apple Home, Google Home, etc.). In Aqara’s case, Matter devices in Aqara Home require a hub such as Doorbell Camera Hub G410, Hub M100, Camera Hub G5 Pro, or Hub M3, and the hub firmware/app should be up to date. Also, IPv6 support on the router matters for adding Matter devices.

In-wall switches are a great “infrastructure first” choice: Aqara’s Light Switch H2 line is specifically designed around Matter over Thread (or Zigbee) and is meant to be exposed to third-party Matter ecosystems—so it fits perfectly with your compatibility-first philosophy.
