Best Practices for Naming Lighting for Alexa Integration

As a new convert to Hubitat from SmartThings, I’m thrilled to be diving into this ecosystem with a fresh perspective. My journey begins with a significant project: installing 70 Jasco Z-Wave light switches in a brand-new 5,000-square-foot home. With Echo devices planned for every room, I’m eager to ensure seamless voice control through Alexa. However, I’m faced with a challenge: how to name and group these lights effectively to allow both room-wide and individual control.

The obvious approach is to group lights by room, such as the kitchen, family room, or master bedroom. But with multiple lights in each room—like ceiling lights, counter lights, and pendant lights in the kitchen—naming becomes crucial. For instance, should I name them ‘Kitchen Ceiling Lights’ or ‘Kitchen Counter Lights’? My goal is for someone to walk into any room and simply say, ‘Turn on the kitchen lights,’ without Alexa responding with confusion.

After some research, I’ve discovered that clarity and consistency are key. Using specific descriptors like ‘Ceiling’ or ‘Counter’ helps differentiate each light set. However, I’m still unsure if this approach will allow both room-wide and individual control without causing ambiguity. I’d love to hear from others who’ve tackled similar setups—what worked for you? What naming conventions did you find most effective? Any pitfalls to avoid? Your insights would be invaluable as I embark on this exciting project. Happy to share my progress and learn from the community!
