Brand new P1 not working as it should

So I bought a P1 for the landing stairs, and I set it up tonight or didn’t.

I could not get it to detect anything more than mm aways from it. I either had to pick it up or wipe my hand across the front of it to detect anything at all. I tried adjusting sensitivity…i tried it directly through app and through hub and directly through Homey… all with same results. Now im thinking it’s either rubbish or it’s faulty. This came from Aqara UK on Amazon.

Anyone else this issue with the P1 ?

@The_Heckmeister Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your Aqara Motion Sensor P1! It’s frustrating when a new device doesn’t work as expected, especially for a specific setup like your landing stairs.

From your description—only detecting motion when extremely close (mm away)—a potential cause could be related to the PIR probe or lens. According to common troubleshooting for the P1, one possible reason for unusual detection behavior is a damaged PIR probe or lens . Have you had a chance to check if the sensor’s lens is clean, undamaged, or free from any obstructions? Sometimes even a small smudge or misalignment can affect detection range.

If that doesn’t resolve it, since you’ve already tried adjusting sensitivity and different connection methods, reaching out to customer support would be a good next step. They can help verify if it’s a hardware issue. Contact the Aqara Home App Customer Service Team (Home > Help & Feedback > Customer Service) or scan the QR code:

Hope this gets sorted quickly! Let us know if you find a solution—others might benefit from your experience too.

Hello, welcome to the forum. I have 8 of them (P1). They all work perfectly. Maybe you turned them upside down on the ceiling. Then the definition diagram will change (it will be up). I put them like that when I want to so that they react to animals walking in the room.

It definitely seems to be a sensor issue. I’ve reset it …reconnected it and everything in-between. As stated it works when I’m practically on top of it but not at any distance. Think it must be my luck, and just a faulty one. Unfortunately!

It’s a shame as I had high hopes for it.

Being as I’m working so much as it’s close to Christmas, I’ve not had time to send it back.

Hello, if the sensor is no longer under warranty (cannot be replaced), then try checking the battery. I once bought a device that had been in storage for a long time, the seller agreed to replace the battery, which had discharged itself. After the replacement, everything was OK…

So I tried everything to no avail.

I have now returned the item in question, but am a bit hesitant on getting another as a replacement.

I think of all the relatively complex sensors that Aqara make that work flawlessly and im struck down by a pretty basic one :unamused:
