CCU Migration and Smart Device Integration Tips

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and it’s been quite a journey! After using CCU2 for years, I decided to upgrade to CCU3 for better performance and future-proofing. However, the migration process wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped. Here’s what I learned and how I overcame the challenges.

The Challenge:
When migrating from CCU2 to CCU3, I faced issues with HMIP devices not being recognized after restoring the backup. The classic HM devices worked fine, but all my HMIP sensors and actuators were missing. I tried re-learning them through the app, even resetting them to factory settings, but nothing worked. It was frustrating because I wanted to maintain all my existing configurations.

What I Did Next:
I reached out to the community for advice and discovered a few key steps that made all the difference:

  • Backup Preparation: Ensure all HMIP devices are in a learnable state before backing up. This means they should be in a state where they can be re-learned without issues.
  • Addon Management: Remove unnecessary addons on CCU2 before taking the backup. While it’s true that addons aren’t part of the backup, having fewer active services can reduce potential conflicts during migration.
  • Patience: After restoring the backup on CCU3, give it some time. The system might need a few minutes to rekey HMIP devices over the internet, especially if there are many of them.

The Outcome:
By following these steps, I successfully migrated all my devices without losing any configurations. It’s a relief to have everything working seamlessly again!

Additional Thoughts:
If you’re integrating multiple brands into your smart home setup, like I am with both HM and HMIP devices, it’s crucial to test each integration thoroughly. I’ve found that using a mix of devices can sometimes lead to unexpected issues, but the community support has been invaluable in troubleshooting.

If anyone else is planning a CCU migration or has questions about integrating different smart devices, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more tips or help troubleshoot issues.

Happy automating!
