Choosing the Right Router for Optimal Home Connectivity

Hi everyone! I’m currently in the process of upgrading my home network, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my experience and maybe help others who are in a similar situation.

I’ve been using an EE router connected to an Openreach fibre modem, but I’m looking to enhance both the speed and configurability of my setup. The big question I’m facing is whether I need a modem/router combo or if a standalone router would suffice.

After doing some research, I discovered that many modern routers come with built-in modems, which can simplify the setup by eliminating the need for a separate modem. However, if the existing modem is already providing stable and fast internet, it might be more cost-effective to stick with it and opt for a high-quality router instead.

One thing I’m particularly interested in is the range and coverage these routers offer. With smart home devices becoming more prevalent, having a reliable and strong signal throughout the house is crucial. I’ve heard great things about routers with mesh capabilities, but I’m still on the fence about whether it’s necessary for my setup.

I also want to explore the configuration options. A more configurable router could offer better customization for my network, which is something I value. I’m looking into open-source firmware options like DD-WRT or OpenWrt, which could provide more control and advanced features.

If anyone has experience with specific routers or can share their setup, I’d love to hear about it! Whether it’s a modem/router combo or a standalone router, understanding the pros and cons from real users would be incredibly helpful.

Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other make the best choice for our home networks! :rocket:
