The holiday season is the perfect time to get creative with smart home automation!
I recently set up an automated Christmas light system using OpenHAB and Z-Wave devices. Here’s how I did it:
Setup Details:
- Hardware: I used a GE Z-Wave smart plug to control my Christmas tree lights. The plug was added to my Z-Wave network and grouped under a “christmasLights” group for easier management.
- Automation Rules: I created two rules in OpenHAB:
- Christmas Lights ON: This rule activates the lights at dusk, starting from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. It uses the Astro binding to detect sunset and triggers the lights accordingly.
- Christmas Lights OFF: This rule turns the lights off at 11 PM every day from November to December.
Why I Love This Setup:
- It adds a festive touch to my home without any manual intervention.
- I can easily adjust the timing or disable the lights through OpenHAB or Alexa.
- It’s energy-efficient since the lights only come on when needed.
If you’re thinking about automating your holiday decorations, I highly recommend exploring OpenHAB’s rule engine and Astro binding! ![]()
