Closet Lighting Automation

I wanted to share a recent project where I used Aqara gear to automate the lighting in my closet, and honestly, it turned out better than I expected.

The setup starts with an Aqara Light Switch mounted on the outside of my closet. That switch controls the main overhead closet light.

My closet has bi-fold doors, and I placed an Aqara Door & Window Sensor right where the doors split in the middle. That sensor is the key to the automation.

Inside the closet, I added Aqara LED Strip T1s along with LED Strip T1 Extensions. I installed them in two main areas. First, inside the open shelving of my closet system. Second, along the wall that runs parallel to the clothing rods where everything hangs.

Using a few connectors and some wire I bought online, I was able to break-up the strips into sections. That let me put light exactly where I wanted it and leave areas dark where lighting didn’t make sense.

The automation is simple but very effective. When I open the closet door, the Door & Window Sensor triggers both the main closet light and all of the LED strips to turn on at the same time. No reaching for switches, no fumbling around in the dark.

I haven’t done it yet, but when I’m feeling a bit more motivated, I plan to add additional LED strips inside the drawers so they light up automatically when opened.

The end result is pretty impressive. Opening the closet makes everything light up instantly, and it gives the whole space a very high-end feel. It’s one of those automations that feels both practical and a little bit luxurious, even though it’s built from relatively simple components.

If anyone is thinking about upgrading a closet or similar space, I’d definitely recommend trying something like this with Aqara’s switches, sensors, and LED strips.

Great work! I need to think about doing that!

I wonder if I could integrate a condition in which the light in my closet would turn on before my appointments to remind me to get dressed early, because I always seems to be doing that last minute

In my case, my calendar notification would be coming from my iPhone. On iOS, you cannot trigger an automation from a Calendar notification itself. However, you can trigger automations from the calendar event that causes the notification. This is how I would do it

Instead of the notification, use the event timing.

How it works
• Shortcuts can trigger when a calendar event starts or ends
• This fires automatically, even if the notification is disabled

Setup
1. Open Shortcuts
2. Go to Automation → Personal Automation
3. Choose Calendar
4. Select:
• Specific calendar or
• Events with a title contains keyword
5. Choose Starts or Ends
6. Add your actions (HomeKit, Home Assistant webhook, Pushcut, etc.)
7. Turn Ask Before Running → OFF

Very nice one.

I did the same using the Aqara COB H2 Lightstrip and the Aqara T1 constant driver.

There is a trick for the driver to add if you select Zigbee on pairing it will find your M3 hub with Other region also. Eventhough not in the list of devices. Thanks Aqara for allowing it!

I am thinking in vibration sensor as I have multiple doors. But the T1 Lightstrip section control can be a good idea only light up the door section where you open it.

Whoa! This is awesome. I was just thinking about doing something similar in my pantry. Is there a way to do using batteries, or do I need to run power?

Would you mind sharing what connectors you used to create the breaks in lighting?

My closet is hard-wired, but I did put in some night lighting in my bathroom where I don’t have access to a convenient outlet. I used the following:

  1. Aqara LED Strip T1
*Depending on your needs, you can extend the strip up to 10 meters with the T1 extension kits (sold separately). The 10 meters is based on being able to plug into an outlet. What I am suggesting will be using a battery source, which may limit the maximum length. Depending on your needs, you would have to test and see.

  2. Aqara Motion Sensor

  3. Uninterruptible Power Supply
Amazon.com: 6000mAh DC 12V 2A Uninterruptible Power Supply for Router Modem Security Camera Mini UPS Battery Backup Power Supply : Electronics
*You could also use a large capacity power bank.

  4. Barrel Jack to USB Type A Female Connector Adapter

In place of the Aqara power plug, you would connect the adapter to the LED’s barrel plug and connect the USB side to the UPS or a Power Bank.

Since mine is used as a night light in the bathroom that is triggered by an Aqara Motion Sensor under my bed when I get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, the light is set to a warm white at a very low level. As a result, it will probably be months before you ever have to charge it. But, I guess it depends on how often you get up in the middle of the night. My automation will also only trigger the light if my third party ambient light sensor indicates that the light level is under a certain lux level.

I hope this helps. I would love to see a reply or a post with what you did. Good luck.

I would recommend the following cables and connectors if you need to extend. If you look online, you can find some cables that already have the connectors built-in. However, they come in fixed lengths. The roll of 5-pin ribbon/cable gives you more flexibility.

-LEDENET 22AWG 5pin 33FT 10M RGBW Electrical Extension Cable

-Flutesan 20 Pcs 5 Pin 12 mm LED Strip Connector

This is fantastic advice.

I did the same thing with the Aqara Door Sensor but with my main closet lights and tied it to my Leviton system. Most of my smart switches are Leviton. But I love this too. Our switch is on the inside wall of the closet so you used to walk into darkness then flip the switch. No More!
