Combining Homematic Dimmers with Non-Homematic Motion Sensors

Hello everyone, I hope this message finds you well! I’m thrilled to share my latest smart home project with you, and I’m eager to get your thoughts and suggestions.

I’ve recently started my journey into the world of smart home automation, and I’m absolutely loving the possibilities it brings. My current project involves automating the lighting in my hallway and bathroom. I’ve envisioned a system where the lights adjust based on motion detection, with different brightness levels during the day and night. Specifically, I want the lights to dim to 80% during the day and to 20% at night when triggered by motion.

To achieve this, I plan to use a combination of Homematic dimmers and non-Homematic motion sensor switches. The hallway has five light switches controlling three lamps, and I want to integrate a dimmer into one of them while using motion sensors for the rest. This setup would allow me to maintain the existing functionality while adding smart features.

However, I have a few questions that I’d love to get your input on:

  1. Compatibility: Can I pair a Homematic dimmer with a non-Homematic motion sensor switch? Are there specific models that work better together?
  2. Functionality: Will the lights activate correctly if triggered by a motion sensor that isn’t connected to the dimmer?
  3. Alternative Solutions: Are there other approaches or devices that could make this setup more efficient or reliable?

I completely understand if these questions seem basic—I’m still learning the ropes! Any advice or experiences you can share would be invaluable. I’m excited to see how the community can help me bring this project to life.

Thank you in advance for your support and insights! I look forward to hearing from you all.

Best regards,
