Greetings, fellow smart home enthusiasts!
I wanted to share my recent experiences with setting up multiple Google Home devices and securing my Home Assistant setup. It’s been a journey of learning and tweaking, and I’d love to hear others’ tips and tricks!
First off, I recently added a second Google Home Mini to my upstairs room. Configuring it alongside my existing setup was a breeze, but I wanted to ensure each device controlled the right media players. I discovered that assigning rooms in the Home Assistant configuration was key. Now, when I say, ‘Hey Google, play radio upstairs,’ it seamlessly switches to the upstairs setup without any confusion. It’s all about the room assignments and consistent naming!
On another note, I’ve been diving into securing my network. Running everything behind a VPN adds a layer of protection I feel more comfortable with. However, integrating Google Assistant without Nabu Casa meant I had to port-forward my Home Assistant through the VPN. While effective, it felt like a potential security loophole. After some research, I found a way to use SSH tunneling instead, which keeps things secure without compromising functionality. It’s a bit of a workaround, but it works beautifully!
I’d love to hear how others manage their multi-device setups and security measures. Have you found innovative ways to keep your smart home both functional and secure? Let’s share and learn together! ![]()
