Connecting Older Samsung Fridge to SmartThings: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey everyone, I recently came across a challenge that I thought I’d share and hopefully get some feedback on. I’ve been trying to connect an older Samsung refrigerator (RS22HDHPNSR from 2014) to my SmartThings setup on my iPhone 12. At first glance, it seemed straightforward, but I ran into a few hurdles that I wanted to work through and document for anyone else who might be facing the same issue.

The Setup

I’ve been using SmartThings for a while now, and it’s been a great way to integrate various smart home devices into my daily routine. The Samsung fridge, however, was proving to be a bit of a puzzle. The original instructions mentioned a different app, but since I’m on an iPhone, that wasn’t an option. I decided to follow the steps provided in the Samsung support article for connecting non-Family Hub refrigerators to SmartThings.

The Process

  1. Opening the SmartThings App: I started by opening the SmartThings app and navigating to the device tab. From there, I selected ‘Add’ and chose ‘Refrigerator’ under the device type. I was prompted to select my location and room, which I did, and then tapped ‘Next.’

  2. Unlocking the Temperature Control: The next step was to open the fridge door and press the Door Alarm button. This unlocked the temperature control panel, just as the instructions had mentioned. I pressed the Fridge button until I saw “AP” appear on the display. This was supposed to put the fridge into pairing mode.

  3. Connecting to Wi-Fi: After a few moments, the fridge appeared in the SmartThings app. I was then prompted to select my Wi-Fi network and enter the password. I made sure to connect it to the same network as my phone to avoid any connectivity issues.

  4. Completion: Finally, I named the fridge and tapped ‘Done.’ The fridge was now listed in my SmartThings app, and I was hopeful that I could start controlling it remotely.

The Hiccups

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped. I encountered a 04-100 error during the connection process, which I later found out is a common issue with older Samsung models. The error message suggested resetting the refrigerator, but following those steps didn’t resolve the problem. I tried resetting the fridge multiple times, but the error persisted.

The Solution

After some research, I discovered that the issue might be related to the firmware on the refrigerator. I found a guide that suggested updating the fridge’s firmware through Samsung’s support website. It was a bit of a tedious process, but once I updated the firmware, the fridge connected without any issues.

Final Thoughts

It was a bit frustrating to run into the 04-100 error, but breaking down the problem and tackling it step by step helped me find a solution. I’m now able to monitor and control my fridge’s temperature from my phone, which is a huge convenience. If anyone else is struggling with a similar issue, I’d recommend checking for firmware updates as a potential fix.

I’d love to hear from others who’ve successfully connected older Samsung appliances to SmartThings. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them? Let’s share our experiences and help each other out!
