After months of searching, I finally came across the Control4 8-Channel Dimmer (C4-DIN-8DIM-E) and decided to give it a try. My goal was to split my outdoor lights into three dimmable zones, each controlled through SmartThings (ST). While the dimmer is overkill for just three zones, it was the only solution I could find that fit my needs.
I wanted to share my setup experience and some lessons learned. First, installation was straightforward—mounting it on a DIN rail in my mechanical room. However, getting it to communicate with ST over Ethernet was a bit of a challenge. I reached out to the community for advice, and several members suggested using a third-party integration or a custom rule setup in ST.
One thing I discovered is the importance of proper configuration in the Control4 ecosystem. I had to tweak some settings within the Control4 software to ensure smooth communication with ST. Thankfully, the community was incredibly helpful, providing step-by-step guidance and troubleshooting tips.
Now that everything is up and running, I’m thrilled with the results. Each zone responds perfectly to ST commands, and the dimming is smooth and consistent. It’s a clean solution without the need for physical switches in my basement, which was a major goal of mine.
