Could a 5-6 Channel Smart Junction Box Relay Be Possible?

Hello everyone,

Most smart relays on the market are usually limited to 1 or 2 channels. I was wondering if it would technically be possible to create a compact in-wall module for junction boxes that could distribute a single live input into 4, 5, or even 6 separate outputs.

I think this kind of product could provide advantages such as:
cleaner wiring, centralized control, easier power distribution, reduced cable clutter inside junction boxes

Of course, I understand there may be technical challenges such as current capacity, heat generation, and electrical safety. However, I believe a product like this could be very useful in modern smart home systems.

Hi, I think it’s possible to develop such a relay… but one problem is sure the size and the usecases - and niche products are hard to sell …

Just like @DEChrisE said. Those relays/switches utilize physical electromagnetic switches - they are more reliable and safer, and physically cut power. No risk of damage to other devices when any device in a circuit malfunctions and there is no “ghost voltage” in the circuit.

Of course it is possible to build a very small relay with MOSFETs and a single control circuit (like ESP32), but it will not physically open the circuit and it will have a ghost voltage (some sensitive lights or devices will pick it up and won’t turn off). And if any device has malfunctioned and caused an overvoltage/short then it will burn anything connected to the relay, including the relay.

In addition, the cost of such a device will not be cheaper than the cost of three T2 relays. The advantage of one T2 relay as a module is the quick replacement of two channels. If there are 6 channels and 1 channel fails, you will have to replace one 6-channel module.

Hello @Cadaver32 This will be a larger relay than the T2. For these purposes, it’s better to use a relay with 6 or more channels and mount it in a DIN rail electrical panel. I’m currently testing a similar relay from another manufacturer, and it works with the M300.

I agree with replacing it if one channel breaks, but one way or another, one six-channel relay will be cheaper than 3 T2 relays, since the costs for 3 boards, 3 Zigbee modules, 3 cases, 3 antennas, and so on are much higher for three devices than for one, since you only need one of these components.
