Creating a Guest-Friendly Smart Home Dashboard

I’ve been really excited about making my smart home more accessible to guests, especially since I often have family and friends staying over. After reading through some of the incredible posts here, I decided to dive into creating a guest dashboard that’s both user-friendly and seamless. Here’s what I’ve learned and how I’ve approached the project!

First, I wanted something that could be easily mounted without damaging my walls, as I’m currently renting. A Fire 7 tablet seemed like the perfect solution—it’s affordable, lightweight, and can be mounted with a simple adhesive bracket. I’ve also been exploring smart plugs to power the tablet, ensuring it stays charged without any hassle. I reached out to the community about whether smart plugs could handle the power needs, and the feedback has been really helpful!

Designing the dashboard itself has been a fun challenge. I’ve been using the Hubitat Dashboard App and experimenting with layouts that are intuitive for anyone, regardless of their tech-savviness. Big, clear buttons for lights, speakers, and the TV have been a hit so far. I’m also thinking about adding a quick weather check and maybe even a timer for things like coffee makers or lamps. The goal is to make it so easy that even my grandma can navigate it without any issues!

One thing I’m still pondering is whether to include a separate dashboard just for guests or stick with a simplified version of my main one. I’d love to hear others’ experiences with this—has anyone successfully created a guest-only dashboard that’s both secure and user-friendly?

I’ve also been brainstorming what else could be added to enhance the experience. Maybe a welcome message or some preset scenes like ‘Goodnight’ or ‘Morning Coffee.’ It’s all about making guests feel comfortable and in control without overwhelming them with options.

If anyone has tips on design best practices or specific apps that work well for guest dashboards, I’d be thrilled to hear them! It’s been such a rewarding project, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Let’s keep the ideas flowing—this community is amazing at sharing knowledge and making smart homes truly smart for everyone!
