Creating a Linked Lighting System with OpenHAB

Hi everyone, I’m new to the world of smart home automation and I’m really excited to dive into OpenHAB. I’ve been experimenting with Philips Hue bulbs in my living room and I’m loving the flexibility they offer. However, I have a specific feature in mind that I’d love to implement, and I’m hoping the community can help me figure it out!

I have multiple Hue bulbs spread out in my living room, and while I enjoy their independent operation, there are times when I want them to work together as a cohesive unit. For instance, when entertaining guests or setting a particular mood, I’d like to be able to link these lights so that adjusting one affects them all. Essentially, I want to create a ‘link’ button on my OpenHAB interface that, when activated, ties all the lights together. Once linked, I’d like any adjustment to one light (like brightness or color) to automatically apply to the others. When the button is disabled, the lights should return to their independent modes.

I’ve started exploring rules and automation in OpenHAB, but I’m not entirely sure how to approach this specific feature. I know it involves some combination of state management and event handling, but I’m looking for guidance on the best practices or existing solutions that might achieve this. Has anyone implemented something similar? Any tips, resources, or examples would be incredibly helpful!

I’m also curious about how others handle linked devices in their setups. Do you prefer a centralized control system, or do you keep things modular? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any challenges you’ve overcome in creating interconnected systems.

Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions! I’m really looking forward to learning more and bringing my vision to life with OpenHAB.
